Those little voices, pictures and images we see as mothers everyday around us of what food to buy, what snacks to give your children, what the latest so called ‘super food’ is can be over whelming and confusing. The packing placed on food these days can be so misleading. I’ve told all our children to read the label and that if there are words mummy can’t pronounce or we see lots of different agents or numbers in them to put the product back on the shelf. How do you find a treat/snack a great excitable food for children without all the nasty ingredients? I met the amazing owner and founder of WHOLE KIDS, Monica Meldrum at an awards night last year, and was so excited to meet her in person. She had not been inspirational in pioneering the children healthy food campaign, but is a woman of influence, business and wanted the best, not just for her young children but others as well. What was better was that our children were eating her products.

My former swim coach told me that your body is like a racing car and you must only put the best fuel into it, it really stuck with me. I tell our children they are super tall because they eat well and I make them sleep during the day (genetics play a huge part too ha!). I’ve taught them that it’s better to buy an orange rather than a bottle of orange juice. Sure they lash out when they go to parties and yes we have treats in the house, but I started implementing a rule before dinner time each night in our household…veggies first and if they are eaten, then dinner can come after whether it’s a BBQ or fish or meat. I’m still working on them eating salad but know it will take time.

Children will continue to be confused with whats good and bad because of all the mass media targeting them, so it’s true, education starts at home. You must teach them to make healthy choices.

Very simply we use 2 sayings ‘everyday foods’ and ‘sometimes food’. It even convicts me at times. Instead of snacking on a biscuit, I’ll reach for the carrot stick instead.

I also find what you bring into the house you will consume so don’t shop on an empty stomach. We’ve heard this so many times and I am guilty of it! SO next time you see me in the shopping aisle eating a picnic bar please give me a good punch! No one is perfect but lets give our children the best.
