I’ve spoken to so many women in all my years as a make-up artist and they all make the same statement “I feel so overwhelmed when I walk into a cosmetic store”. I completely understand, as this also happens to me. We all want to look our best, but there are so many products screaming for our attention and we don’t know where to start.
The important thing to remember is that makeup is an accessory. Just like you would choose a pair of shoes, handbag or earrings to compliment what you’ll be wearing, makeup should be looked at in the same way. Makeup should always compliment your look.
If you’re unsure what to look for, here are a few tips to help you:
SKIN
First thing to look at before makeup is your skin. During these colder months our skin can feel dry and a little dull. So by choosing a moisturiser that’s a little more hydrating, this will help your skin feel dewy and hydrated.
EYEBROWS
Eyebrows are incredibly important as they frame the face. If you don’t like wearing much makeup this is definitely the most important area to maintain. Well-groomed eyebrows can make your eyes appear more youthful.
Be careful not to over pluck or over arch your brows as this draws attention to the puffy area of our eye (our brow bone) and can age us. Thicker eyebrows are in, so stay away from really thin brows as they are definitely out. If you don’t feel confident shaping your brows, reach out to your favourite beauty therapist, makeup artist or brow specialist.
MASCARA
Here’s a tip to remember when applying mascara, always apply a minimum of three coats. The first coat should be from the base of the lashes to the mid section. The second from mid section to the tips, and the final coat goes all over the lashes (don’t forget the bottom ones).
LIPS
There are endless options for our lips ranging from ointments to tinted lip-glosses, lipsticks, lip stains. Whatever your favourite may be, always make sure your lips are moisturized. Lips are skin, so if they are dry and flaky, the lipstick that you put on will also look (and feel) dry and flaky.
A great tip to make your lips look fuller is to concentrate lip conditioners or glosses in the centre of the lip, as this will give the lips a much fuller and plump look.
Most importantly we don’t all need to look the same, as we are all unique women with different personalities and styles. So always stay true to what looks good on you and what you feel comfortable wearing.
