THREE WAYS TO LIFT YOUR MOOD WITH FOOD
I meet lots of women who get ‘hangry’. I’m one myself. Without fail, if I get caught up and go too far past lunch without eating, I end up cranky and headachey. I may have long passed the point where I have the sensation of being hungry, but my body is crying out for sustenance. And that’s only half the story.
There is a growing body of research suggesting that food absolutely does affect your mood. Factors like the bacteria that line your gut, the overall quality of your diet and a range of nutrients all play an important role in your mental well-being. This is one of the main reasons I am constantly reminding my mums the importance of eating regular meals throughout the day, and remembering to look after yourself amidst the hustle and bustle of every day life.
But the good news is that there are some simple tips, that anyone can implement, to help you on the road to feeling your best:
- DON’T SKIP MEALS: This is the most important one for managing your mood and sets you up for a good day from beginning to end. While there are no set times anyone should eat, make sure that you do eat regularly throughout the day to keep your energy levels up. The added benefit of fueling yourself well throughout the day is that it will also stop you reaching for high sugar, high calorie foods as meal replacements when you eventually hit that low point in the day, usually mid afternoon.
- EAT A RAINBOW EVERYDAY: Fruit and vegetables are your number one source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, each of which play a vital role in your physical and mental health. The high fibre content of fruit and vegetables also leaves you feeling full.
- CHOOSE WHOLE GRAINS AND GOOD QUALITY LEAN PROTEINS: All food groups are good for you, and the more good quality foods you choose, the less likely you are to reach for less healthy options.
Last, but definitely not least, treat yourself. Yep, eat chocolate if you want to. Just be mindful of how much and how often.
