‘I’m a modern woman and I can do it all’. It’s the catchcry of the 21st Century woman – also known as mother, wife, housekeeper, employee or CEO. We’ve become so caught up in the pursuit of the end game…whatever that is, that we’ve let it take over our here and now. And I’m the worst of all.
After a life spent working in corporate, three years ago I started my own business. It was an attempt to find better work/life balance, do something I was passionate about and in truth, achieve a string of buzzwords – like flexibility, self-prioritisation and self-nurturance. Sound familiar?
Someone probably should have told me that if it was balance and down time I was after, a talent agency was probably not the best choice. But, I made a conscious choice to pursue something I was passionate about – building media careers, and educating Australians to live a better and healthier lifestyle.
I’m a Type A personality and it’s not in my nature to coast, so when the business started taking off, I put my head down and worked harder than ever, putting in more hours and taking on more and more in an effort to ensure our business was best in class and deliver a service to our clients that was second to none.
I’ve spent hours, days and weeks working on the best looking business plan, building budget forecasts and working out ways in which to diversify the business and build additional revenue streams whilst still staying true to what we do best – working with some of the best health and lifestyle experts Australia has to offer.
Yet for a short moment, somewhere along the way I lost the ‘why’, the thing that makes me get up every morning, the reason I left my corporate life to build something of my own. It wasn’t until a morning walk with my seven year old daughter that I realised it.
Now, I’m a lucky woman. Those close to me are in good health. I have an amazing, supportive and incredibly funny husband, two beautiful little girls, a close family, a thriving business and wonderful friends who make me laugh constantly. I exercise – not the boot camp, gym junkie punishment type – I’m more of an at home Tabata, yoga video type with a couple of nice long brisk walks thrown in for good measure. I live close to the beach, I like nice things and am prepared to work for them, but the most important thing in my life is undoubtedly the people around me and making sure we laugh every single day. I sound like I have it all together, so why would I need life advice from my young daughter? Check it out in my next post!
