SLEEP DEPRIVATION

It’s a form of torture you know! I suffered this torture at the hands of 4 little cherubs for probably nearly 14 years! The first two children I was very regimented with and they slept in their own beds all night regardless of how much they protested. They could come in and say hello in the morning (if they dared!!). The next two was a case of “I’m so tired, as long as everyone is asleep, I don’t care where they are”…and I tell you one method was not better than the other. They all got to around age 3 or 4 and were quite content to stay in their own beds all night long (although the younger two still like having sleepovers in each other’s rooms on the weekends, which is rather cute and I wonder how long it will last).

Confessions

So, for 14 years I was a walking zombie. My brain had turned to fluffy clouds of cotton wool and information would fly in there and get lost or refuse to land and continue on its way. Once I forgot to strap the baby in the car (in my defence, I had to pack all the baby stuff in the boot, deal with a 2-year-old tantrum, a smarty pants 7-year-old and an absentminded 10-year-old – there was a lot going on!!) when I got to the end of the driveway the baby fell out of the seat (mother of the year moment – everyone survived, no one was hurt…my children are now paranoid about seat belts, EVERYONE learnt a lesson that day!). Another time I realised my son had forgotten his school lunch so I drove all the way into town only to get to school and realise I’d forgotten to pack his lunch.

Other people seemed to be able to cope much better than I did with their lack of sleep…but the point is I DIDN’T! To all parents out there…GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SLEEP DEPRIVATION!! MAY YOU ALL BE THE OPPOSITE OF ME!!

I have now had a few years of blissful uninterrupted sleep, the torture does come to an end! I feel more human…but just recently…my husband started snoring!
